The real story
A few years ago, I was running a small business and desperately needed a proper website. I couldn't afford to hire a full agency — the quotes I got started at R30,000 and went up from there. So I tried to build one myself using a website builder.
What I ended up with looked like every other generic small business website on the internet. The colours were off. The words felt hollow. Nothing about it felt like me. And worst of all, it wasn't bringing in any business.
So I threw it out and started learning properly. I studied web design, taught myself Next.js, read every book I could find on copywriting and brand voice. Eventually, I rebuilt my site from scratch — and it actually worked.
Other small business owners started asking me to do the same for them. One referral became two. Two became ten. And eventually I realised: this is the business I should actually be running.
The Website Alchemist was born out of frustration. Frustration with agencies who treat small businesses as afterthoughts. Frustration with website builders that produce cookie-cutter results. And frustration with the false choice between “expensive and professional” and “cheap and generic.”
